AUGUST 22, 2002 Compositing Water Effects in Photoshop
Baby steps Now just follow these steps. [an error occurred while processing this directive] 1. To create our effect, the first thing we're going to do is use the Lasso tool (or whatever your preferred method is) to select the area of our image where the water will go. For the image I'm using, this is a no-brainer.
Once you've selected this area, choose Select > Save Selection, and name it whatever you want. You may feather the selection a little, if you'd like to soften the edges of this effect, by choosing Select > Feather.
2. Now, in your Layers palette, click the "New Layer" button. (Or select Layer > New > Layer.) With your selection still active, choose the Gradient tool, which, by default, is hidden under the Paint Bucket tool. You can toggle between the two using Shift-G. Drag the Gradient tool across your selection horizontally so that it goes from black to light gray.
Once you've done this, you to your Layers palette and change the blend mode to Multiply and the opacity to about 46 percent, give or take.
3. Now create yet another new layer and drag the gradient tool bottom to top so that the upper portion of the image is white, with the bottom portion black or dark gray. (Note in the picture below I first feathered my selection by about 20 pixels.)
Then go to your Layers palette again and change the blend mode to Lighten and the opacity to about 23 percent, again give or take.
