AUGUST 14, 2002 Creating an Aged Photograph in Photoshop
The effect will not be terribly subtle, so now choose Edit > Fade Torn Edges. Set the mode to Overlay and the Opacity to about 60. Maybe less, depending on your image and the effect you're trying to create. The benefit of doing this, aside from "subtlizing" the effect, is that it creates the illusion of depth on the frayed image by making some of the edge slightly transparent.

If you want more dramatic tears in your image (which I don't), simply use the freehand Marquis tool to select small areas of the edges, and then clear the selection. Simple enough.
Finishing touches All that's left at this point is final color adjustment. Remember that we preserved our adjustment layers throughout this process, so we can now go in and get just the right color values, now that we're done messing with the image itself. And, if you want to create the card mount for the image, you can now do so. I'd suggest merging all of your visible layers and then create the card in the background, carrying over stains from the edges of the photo, applying edge effects and discoloring the card a little bit. These are all techniques we've already applied to the image, so there's no need to go into detail. Here's a quick sample of the card (and photo) just to give you an idea of how a full cabinet card might look.
