Auto Contrast For reasons known only to me, my next favorite filter in the set is Auto Contrast. Auto Contrast, like the built-in Auto Contrast Feature in Photoshop, is a one-step function for fixing up the contrast in an image. It works in 8- and 16-bit modes, and the results are, to put it simply, better than what you get using the built-in Photoshop feature. [an error occurred while processing this directive] How? Well, first, the filter is a bit more aggressive than the built-in feature, meaning that it provides a more extreme correction than the Photoshop version. And it's also incremental, meaning that you can apply it multiple times for varying results--up to about four or five times, depending on the image. Below you'll see some comparisons using a portion of a still captured from DV footage.
I've also found that the Optipix Auto Contrast filter can be used to pretty decent effect when combined with the Blend Exposures filter. Below you'll see a terrible image fixed up a little bit using Optipix Auto Contrast, Brightness/Contrast and Blend Exposures.
Notice the increased apparent saturation without the introduction of artifacts. This is somewhat akin to multiplying a light layer over a dark layer but with better and quicker results.
