For Playback Offset, Black and Code the tape in the machine you are going to use with the Edit to Tape function in Final Cut Pro. Once you have about a minute of striped tape, press escape and then take some bars and tones, lay them into a timeline and use the Edit to Tape function again to Assemble edit back to tape. Once you have finished this, go to your in point and check to see that the in is correct. Now go to your out point and make sure that your out point is correct too. We have noticed that with Final Cut Pro and the DSR decks that you might have up to a 5-frame discrepancy. To remove this, add or subtract the proper amount of frames. Duplicate the same test and make sure that your in and out points are the same as on the timeline.

Now you have a timecode accurate and frame accurate system. [an error occurred while processing this directive] Onlines
We do a number of online sessions and the one function that is always needed is Media Manager. When re-capturing, Final Cut Pro, by default, will capture every piece of media that was included in the project. To avoid this, highlight the sequence in the Browser and either right click or option click on the icon and choose Media Manager.

Once inside Media Manager, choose make offline and delete all unused media. This will only effect the new sequence and not the original. A new project will open and from this project recapture your media. If you are using FCP 3.0 there is a bug with this function that has no solution at this time. Do not use the EDL export function, as it will not work properly when you re-import it. (your edits will be off) Try using the 2.02 version of the software if you intend on mastering with Final Cut Pro.

Most projects that are done this way are cut with the DV settings. You will have to change your new sequence settings to reflect the capture card that you are using.

This simple tool will save you hours and storage space.
