To illustrate that the Map layer is the only visible layer on this track, you can turn it on and off by clicking its "eye" icon, or use the Media pop-up menu under the orange V1 icon to select something else, say, an imported QuickTime movie or a still image file.

I'm going to leave it on V1, and add the Burnt Film filter. Once again, I'm going to control-click, or right-click on the Map layer and select New Filter> Distortion> Burnt Film. Right away, you'll see what happens, as in the illustration here: the map layer has started to burn away, with fire mapped to the edges. [an error occurred while processing this directive]

To animate the burning effect, select the first keyframe in the Burnt Film layer and set the burn amount to zero. I think a linear interpolation looks good, so I choose that with using the pop-up menu in the interpolation box.

Set the burn amount to 1 on the last keyframe, and you're done.

Almost.

Step 3
Finishing touches

Now that the fire has been mapped to the edges of the Burnt Film layer, the scale of the fire is no longer correct. Easily remedied: Back on the Basic tab of the Fire filter, increase the scale to 2, and set the interpolation to Constant again. In fact, unlock the X and Y scale, and increase the Y scale to 2.25 or 2.5 to give a little extra height to the fire.

Burnt Film has its own map layer, which allows you to change the way the layer dissolves. You can edit the supplied gradient or put in one of your own. You can also reverse the direction of the dissolve so that the layer burns ON, of course, by selecting the first and last keyframes and choosing Reverse Keyframes from the Track menu.
